Third Annual Armenian Genocide Essay Competition to Take Place in Metro Detroit

The Armenian Genocide Committee of Greater Detroit announces the third annual Armenian Genocide Essay competition and call for entries. The competition, which is funded by the Hagopian Family Foundation, recognizes and awards Michigan middle and high school students who have written a successful essay on the first genocide of the 20th Century, often called “the forgotten genocide.”

This is the third year that this statewide competition has been offered to students with the hope that it will stimulate a comparative study of the many aspects surrounding the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey with other genocides in modern history.

Some suggested themes for this Essay Competition include events which precipitated the Armenian Genocide and other genocides, actions and/or responses taken by individuals and governments in response to the Armenian Genocide and other genocides, and whether the US Government should formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. Complete guidelines can be found at www.essaycompetition2010.com.

Edgar Hagopian, chair of the Armenian Genocide Committee and Patriarch of the Hagopian Family Foundation, stated that he “feels this project is a critical and vital key to perpetuating the history of the Armenian people in the minds of students as well as having them learn that a comprehensive study of the Armenian Genocide will aid and educate legislators and leaders to avert future tragedies.” “It is the youth of our nation that will look back to help not only this country move forward, but hopefully, one day the world,” Hagopian concluded.

Instructors may submit their student’s essay entries to The Armenian Genocide Committee at 850 S. Old Woodward, Birmingham, MI 48009, on or before the deadline of April 8. All entries will be judged by a committee consisting of members of the Metro Detroit Armenian Community and winners will be formally announced on April 15. The awards will be presented at a 2010 Armenian Genocide Commemoration on or about April 26; further details will be announced.

The awards given to high school students include: first place, $500, second place, $250, and third place $100; for middle school students : first place, $250, second place, $150 and third place, $100.

In addition, each teacher of the student submitting a winning essay will be given a $100 appreciation award. For additional information, contact The Armenian Genocide Committee by e-mailing Hagopian@aol.com.

49 Writers Online Book Contest 2010

Now that the new year's well underway, we've opened nominations for our next 49 Writers online book club discussion. We've got a nice list going (Blonde Indian; The Yiddish Policemen's Union; Rock, Water, Wild; The Cormorant Hunter's Wife; A Land Gone Lonesome) but if you have another title to add, there's still time before I post the book poll on Monday, January 18. Leave a comment with the original post or email your nomination to debv@gci.net.

Our 49 Writers writing workshop "Finding Your Voice" begins two weeks from tomorrow, on January 30. Three slots remain open. To register, follow the link or email me at debv@gci.net. Judging from registrations so far, we've got a dynamic group of writers in a variety of genres, and we'd love to have you join us. Thanks to support from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and Alaska Sisters in Crime, we're able to offer the workshop at the low rate of $35.

Congratulations to Michael Engelhard, editor of Wild Moments, on a glowing review from Audobon Magazine in their January-February 2010 issue. The Editor's Choice states,"This is top-drawer nature writing—there’s not a clunker in the bunch." On the Audobon website, http://www.audubonmagazine.org/, you'll find an excerpt from the book's editor Michael Engelhard.

I'm not sure you're a real Alaskan unless you've been to Fairbanks, mid-winter. Now there's a reason to visit. Fairbanks author David Marusek will be speaking on Saturday, February 13 at Writing in the Dark, an annual all-day writing retreat sponsored by the Fairbanks Arts Association. It provides the creative writer the opportunity to generate new material, gather ideas, and commune with other writers in the beautiful setting of the Four Winds Foundation.

Marusak's topic is flash fiction, the art of the very, very short story, 1000 words or less. It's a form custom-made for the digital age, great for reading on your phone, as a Tweet, or during a coffee break. For the creative writer, flash fiction offers the chance to sharpen narrative skills in brief, but complete, bursts of fiction. And the form has become so popular that opportunities abound for publication online, in magazines, and as part of writing contests.

David Marusek is a long-time Fairbanks resident. His short fiction has appeared in Playboy, Nature, MIT Technology Review, and Asimov’s, and has been translated into nine foreign languages. His story collection, Getting to Know You, has been released as a Del Rey paperback and was a finalist for the Quill Award. According to Publisher's Weekly, “Marusek's writing is ferociously smart, simultaneously horrific and funny, as he forces readers to stretch their imaginations and sympathies." Marusek loves writing flash fiction between his novel projects and has published three of them in a national magazine.

The cost is $30 (until February 1, $35 at the door) and includes continental breakfast and lunch. For more information, call 907-456-6485 x227.

And that's not all that's happening in Fairbanks. As part of their commitment to showcasing the work of Alaskan playwrights, the Fairbanks Drama Association and The Looking Glass Group Theatre invite Alaskan residents to send in their best ten-minute plays to be considered for the 9th Annual 8X10 Festival of New Alaskan Plays. Eight ten-minute plays will be given rehearsed staged readings at the Festival, which will be held April 16 & 17, 2010, at FDA’s Riverfront Theater in Fairbanks.

Scripts must be written by Alaskan residents, with one entry per playwright and one author per play. No musicals or children's plays will be accepted. Submit 5 (five) copies of each script, typed & bound, with pages numbered, and a cover page with playwright’s name and contact info, including phone and e-mail. A “Cast of Characters” page with brief character descriptions should follow the cover page, with a cast size of no more than eight actors. Plays should be between 8 & 12 minutes long based on one minute of playing time per page of script, 12 pt. font size, standard playwriting format. Electronic and Express Mail submissions are not accepted, and scripts will not be returned. Submissions must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2010 and sent to: 8X10 Festival, Fairbanks Drama Association/ Looking Glass Group Theatre, 1852 Second Avenue, Fairbanks, Alaska 99701. For more information, contact Peggy MacDonald Ferguson at 907-456-PLAY or pegferguson@gci.net.

Congratulations to Jo-Ann Mapson, core faculty member, fiction, in UAA's MFA program, on the upcoming publication of another novel, Solomon’s Oak. To be published in hardcover by Bloomsbury in Fall 2010 and simultaneously released in the U.K., Solomon’s Oak is the story of a financially challenged young widow who throws weddings on her ranch-ette in Central California, a former crime lab cop recovering from a devastating injury, a cynical, teenage foster girl who finally finds a home, and of course there are dogs.

Mapson's upcoming book is dedicated in memory of MFA fiction student, Jason Wenger, who was about to start his thesis semester at UAA when he was murdered in Anchorage in December 2007. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Jason Wenger Award for Excellence in Creative Writing, a fund Mapson started at UAA after Jason’s death to support the program he so dearly loved.

Authonomy has partnered with the Act on CO2 campaign offering publication opportunities in an anthology of short stories, fairytales and poems (100 to 3000 words long) on the subject of climate change. View selected submissions and then submit your own by January 31.

If you write for children, you might make note of a couple of contests. Kids agent Mary Kole, who is hosting a contest on her KidLit blog, inviting writers to submit the first 500 words of their finished young adult or middle grade novel. Deadline : Jan. 31, 2010. Also, Sourcebooks is launching a new young adult imprint called Sourcebooks Fire with a contest for YA writers. You're invited to submit your pitch, a bio and the title. Contest runs from Feb. 1 to Feb. 28, 2010.

It's also time once again for The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, an international competition seeking fresh new writing voices. Self-published novels are now eligible, and there will also be two categories this year: Young Adult Fiction and General Fiction. One grand prize winner from each category will receive a full publishing contract with Penguin, including a $15,000 advance. Contest details are listed below, and further information and official rules can be found at www.amazon.com/abna. Contest submission period begins January 25th, 2010 at 12:01 a.m. (U.S. Eastern Standard Time) and ends February 7th, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. (U.S. Eastern Standard Time), or when the first 5,000 entries have been received in each category, whichever is earlier. There is no entry fee.

Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder Contest 2010

The EPA, Generations United, the Dance Exchange, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., announce a poetry, essay, photo and dance contest. Entries must be from a team of two or more persons, a young person and an older person. The creative work should express the "Sense of Wonder" that your team feels for the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is beautiful to your eyes. We want you to share this love of nature with a child and others around you. When we teach our eyes and ears and senses to focus on the wonders of nature, we open ourselves to the wonders around us.

Let Rachel Carson's words inspire you. In 1951 Rachel Carson published her second book The Sea Around Us. The New York Times Book Review wrote

"Each of Miss Carson's chapters is worth sampling ad savoring, and her book adds up to enjoyment that should not be passed by. Every person who reads it will look on the sea with new pleasure."

Beautifully written, in an accessible, nonscientific style, Carson describes the natural wonders of the sea. In the chapter The Birth of an Island she sums up the uniqueness and irreplaceability of the species … "In a reasonable world men would have treated these islands as precious possessions, as natural museums filled with beautiful and curious works of creation, valuable beyond price because nowhere in the world are they duplicated."

Illustrating with words, she captures and illustrates the Earth's evolution including the formation of islands, mountains, and oceans. She brings into focus the creatures of the sea that live near the surface of the sea and then dives deeper into the dark depths of the bottom of the sea.

The Sea Around Us went to the top of the nonfiction best-seller list in the United States, won the National Book Award for Non-Fiction, and was selected for the Book of the Month Club. It was also translated into thirty-three languages.

PhizzPop Design Challenge Prize $50,000

Microsoft Corp. and The Webby Awards today kicked off the Microsoft PhizzPop Boys & Girls Clubs of America Design Challenge, giving interactive design agencies of all sizes a chance to showcase their ingenuity and expertise to help Boys & Girls Clubs of America redesign its Website for the new decade.

Microsoft and The Webby Awards selected Boys & Girls Clubs of America as the contest's beneficiary because they believe a more powerful Website combining the latest Microsoft tools and technologies with the latest design trends will help the 104-year old organization better communicate its mission of helping all youth reach their full potential.

Three finalist teams will win travel and hotel accommodations to MIX10, Microsoft's annual conference for web designers and developers, in Las Vegas (March 15-17). At MIX, finalists will pitch their concepts live before a panel of judges from Microsoft, Boys & Girls Club of America and the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, which judges the Webby Awards.

The winning agency will receive $50,000 towards delivery of their design strategy and plan to Boys & Girls Clubs America, as well as a trip for two to the 14th Annual Webby Awards on June 14, 2010 in New York City, including travel and hotel accommodation. The winning design will be announced during MIX10 and showcased on www.phizzpop.com.

To enter the PhizzPop Design Challenge, go to www.phizzpop.com for guidelines and official rules. Deadline for entries is February 19, 2010.

Participants in the PhizzPop Design Challenge will use the Microsoft Web Platform and Microsoft software tools to develop a proposal for the new Website design for Boys & Girls Clubs of America that could help them better engage donors, parents, volunteers and the media.

Entries will be evaluated based on five criteria: content and communication plan, structure and navigation, visual design, integration of Microsoft technology, and scope of interactivity. High marks will be given to entries that propose a more visually appealing and interactive site reflecting contemporary design trends, and that incorporate the web's best practices in areas such as social media and video.

"For 10 years, we've had the privilege of working closely with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to witness the incredible work they do in transforming the lives of children," said Jon Roskill, corporate vice president of Microsoft's U.S. Business and Marketing Organization and King County Boys & Girls Club board member. "As more tech-savvy kids connect through the Web, it's critical the Clubs bolster their online presence to engage and inform people of their critical services. The PhizzPop Challenge is one step toward achieving this goal, bringing together the best design talent and the very latest Web technologies from Microsoft to help the Clubs continue supporting millions of kids across the country."

"The Webby Awards are thrilled to join forces with Microsoft in challenging agencies to push the envelope in developing new and engaging interactive experiences," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "Our goal is to not only support the vital work of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but to also identify new best practices that can enhance the online efforts of all organizations."

"We are grateful for the opportunity to benefit from some of the brightest and most innovative design talent, especially as it relates to the Web and interactive media," said Boys & Girls Clubs of America President and CEO Roxanne Spillett. "In an increasingly competitive marketplace, nonprofits must meet donors and the general public where they live and the Web cuts across all socio-economic dynamics."

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2010 COMPETITION

Closes at 5pm on 31st July 2010

CIWEM’s Environmental Photographer of the Year honours amateur and professional photographers who use their ability to raise awareness of environmental and social issues. The competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful. But most of all, we want your pictures to inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment.

ELIGIBILITY
The exhibition is open to all professional and amateur, national and international photographers of all ages working with digital and film photography. However, you must ensure that the image quality meets the competition’s criteria as stated below.

CATEGORIES
There will be a winner for each category, with one overall winner who will become the Environmental Photographer of the Year. Each picture must be assigned to only one of the categories below but you may enter more than one picture into a category. There is a maximum of seven images per entrant.

  • Mott MacDonald's Changing Climates
These photographs should illustrate the impacts that global warming is having on our world. This may include places and people that are benefitting from a changing climate, or vulnerable ecosystems and communities which are struggling with the affects. You may wish to examine the interaction between economic development, environmental degradation and social inequity, treating climate change as a human rights issue.

See the 2009 and 2008 category winners

  • Innovation in the Environment (New Category for 2010)
Environmental innovation tends to conjure up technological solutions that help us pollute less or use fewer resources. But, whilst technological change is vital to overcoming many of the environmental hurdles we face, innovation can also come from an inspirational person or organisation making a difference to a community by encouraging a healthier social or physical environment. Therefore images should try to capture the different ways contributions are being made to the pursuit of sustainable development.

  • The Natural World
These images should celebrate the incredible variety and beauty that exists within our natural environment, serving to remind us what we need to protect.

See the 2009 and 2008 category winners

  • The Underwater World (New Category for 2010)
Three-quarters of the world’s surface is water and almost half of the world’s population lives on or close to a coastline, but to many the wonders of the underwater world are virtually unknown. This category allows you to share the incredible secrets the oceans, lakes and even ponds hold, as well as highlight the vital role they play in our world’s survival.

  • Quality of Life
Photographs might illustrate a particular way of life in various rural, urban or social environments all over the world. They may examine individual or community lifestyles, working conditions, leisure activities, cultural traditions, spiritual activities, social inequities, racial prejudices or access to natural resources that impact on people’s quality of life, both positively and negatively.
See the 2009 and 2008 category winners

  • A View From the Western World (New Category for 2010)
Many of those living in the Western World prosper through political and personal freedom, good health and education but the developed world is also associated with excess and waste, stress, over development and environmental degradation. So this is an opportunity to explore all that is good and bad in Western society, perhaps looking to your local communities, politicians, friends or businesses for inspiration or condemnation. Remember, climate change will affect all of us, not just those in seemingly far off places.

CIWEM’s Young Environmental Photographer of the Year
This year we are separating the Young Environmental Photographer of the Year into two groups. This will allow budding photographers a greater chance to compete with their contemporaries. Each group will have a winner, with the overall winner of these two categories gaining the title of CIWEM’s Young Environmental Photographer of the Year.

  • Young Environmental Photographer of the Year - Under 16
You are free to take pictures of anything that excites or interests you about our environment. We would love to see your pictures of wildlife, parks, buildings, your garden or your holidays. But remember - the more creative, the better.
This category is open to anyone under 16 as of the 31st July.

  • Young Environmental Photographer of the Year - Under 21
Although this section has no thematic boundaries, we encourage entries that highlight issues important to you and your generation. This might include things you’ve seen on your travels, inspirational people, places and events, or environmental deterioration in your local area.
This category is open to anyone under 21, including photography students.
See the 2009 and 2008 category winners

N.B. Entrants of any age are eligible to enter the other categories.

CYNETART Competition 2010

Call for entries
Deadline: 28 February 2010

CYNETART Competition 2010
November - December 2010 - Dresden/Germany

Entry form for download
http://t-m-a.de/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/Ausschreibung-CYNETART2010__.pdf

Statement:
Media art is the sensate modelling and equally the almost scientific exploration of the human perception assisted by instruments of media technology. Its starting point is the sensate and conscious presence in our world. This includes various relationships between intrinsic and extrinsic experiences. (see Werner Jauk)

The desired objective of the competition is a multi-perspective discussion of the present development, serving to sensualise the connections.
Based on an „architecture of human perception“ (Klaus Nicolai) we differentiate exploration and modelling according to the following dimensions of human existence in time and space:

_ cosmic
_ global
_ social
_ cultural
_ transcendental
_ mental
_ sensate
_ psychic
_ organic
_ neuro-electric
_ bio-chemical
_ genetic
_ (sub-)atomic

Media art reflects a culture, which is constituted from a global participation and networking of electronic technologies. How does this electronic networking and re-presence of our world affect our perception? How can our perception be modified in order to manage the networking potential adequately? How does the perception of the human inside and outside re-organise itself in this process? What significance does the internet in terms of social networking have for a culture of evolutionary self-organisation and a new structure of information, education and intelligence? How do the mediatisation processes affect the human perception in terms of specialisation and universalisation.
How do the interactions between social actors change the social relations and the individual identity formation as a result of media usage and an increasing dependence from media. How do the technically mediated types of perception interact with the direct sensate types of perception?

Artistic applications provide the opportunity for the public to practice a responsible way of perception in learning about an active participation in „test arrangements“. This helps to develop an appropriate attitude towards human and natural potentials. To this end the following is wanted: dynamic models for the exploration, testing and development of a multi-dimensional perception of body and space. Skoll Foundation Awards for Social Entrepreneurship 2010

The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship
Deadline Feb 17, 2010

The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship support social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale influence on critical challenges of our time: tolerance and human rights, health, economic and social equity, peace and security, institutional responsibility, and environmental sustainability. These issues are at the heart of the foundation’s vision of empowering people to create a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable world. Within these issues, we are particularly interested in applications from social entrepreneurs working in five critical sub-issue areas that threaten the survival of humanity – climate change, nuclear proliferation, pandemics, conflict in the Middle East and water scarcity.

Skoll social entrepreneurs are innovators who have tested and proved their approach, are poised to replicate or scale up their work to create equilibrium change and engage others with a message that resonates with individuals whose resources are crucial to advancing these solutions. The Skoll Awards are designed for leaders who contribute value to a peer network committed to continuous learning. By telling their stories, they join in the foundation’s ongoing celebration of the power of social entrepreneurs.

The Skoll Awards provide later-stage, or mezzanine, funding, subject to payment limitations described below under Budget Guidance. In most cases, the grant is provided for core support to help organizations expand their programs and capacity to deliver long-term, sustainable equilibrium change. The Skoll Awards are not intended for new or early-stage programs or initiatives. Programs submitted for consideration should have a track record of no less than three years. In addition to core support, the Skoll Foundation supports the participation of Award recipients in the annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship.
