Sponsors Ritz Camera Centers, Boater’s World Marine Centers, Maryland Public Television and DNR, encourage student, amateur and professional photographers to submit their photos of Maryland’s diverse natural resources by September 5, 2008

“Our annual photo contest offers photographers of all skill levels the opportunity to share their appreciation of our state’s exceptional natural resources, and the people who enjoy them,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin. ”Each year the exciting images we receive celebrate the breadth and diversity of our exceptional landscapes, waterways and the people who enjoy them.”

Last year, Chuck Prahl of Cambridge topped nearly 400 other photographers with his winning image entitled “Working the Trotline,” a photograph of a fishing boat on the Choptank River in Cambridge. Second place went to Sid Keiser of Cockeysville, for his tranquil shot of the boat Miss Jennifer, “Water Color.” Third place went to Karen Messick of Baltimore, for her close-up, “Spiderwort,” of the native flower.

Photographers of all ages can win up to $1,200 in prizes and a chance to have their outdoor images published in print and online. Winning entries will be featured in the winter issue of The Maryland Natural Resource magazine as well as the 2009 DNR calendar.

Digital Media and Learning Competition 2008

Great news from the HASTAC team - the 2008 DML Competition has launched! Following the success of the 2007 competition, the team is awarding another $2,000,000 in grants to projects exploring participatory learning. From the announcement :

Awards will be given in two categories :

Innovation in Participatory Learning Awards will support projects that demonstrate new modes of participatory learning, in which people take part in virtual communities, share ideas, comment on one another’s projects, and advance goals together. Successful projects will promote participatory learning in a variety of environments: through the creation of new digital tools, modification of existing ones, or use of digital media in some other novel way. Submissions will be accepted from applicants in Canada, People’s Republic of China, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, countries in which HASTAC or MacArthur have significant experience. Winners will receive between $30,000 and $250,000.

Young Innovator Awards are designed to encourage young people aged 18-25 to think boldly about “what comes next” in participatory learning and to contribute to making it happen. Winners will receive funding to do an internship with a sponsor organization to help bring their most visionary ideas from the “garage” stage to implementation. For this competition cycle, submissions will only be accepted from applicants in the United States. Winners will receive between $5,000 and $30,000.

This year’s competition will include an online forum where applicants can post their ideas, solicit feedback, offer their services, and connect with other applicants and potential collaborators. All material posted to this “Digital Media and Learning Scratchpad” is publicly accessible. Participation is voluntary and not required for application.

I was lucky to work with the HASTAC team on some of their digital initiatives for the DML Competition, and I’m happy to see another successful competition launch. If you’re thinking of applying, get moving soon - the deadline for applications is October 15, 2008.

Irish Web Awards 2008 Launch

The Irish Web Awards 2008 have just launched. The event will take place in the Radison SAS Hotel, Dublin on October 11th 2008.

The Web Awards are ran by Damien Mulley, the genius behind the Irish Blog Awards. The awards are a lot more transparent than other award ceremonies in Ireland, where it sometimes appears that the amount of sponsorship money a company pays is linked to the award they win. With the IWA Damien assures everyone that “Nominations are free. Your website will be judged without you putting your hand in your pocket.”

Creators, builders and owners of Irish websites are invited to nominate themselves to the different Awards categories. Good luck to all nominees, particularly Spiral Hosting customers!

INNOVATION IN PARTICIPATORY LEARNING AWARDS

Amounts : $30,000-$250,000
Deadline : 5 pm PDT/8 pm EDT (-7 UTC/-4 UTC), October 15, 2008

About Innovation in Participatory Learning

Innovation in Participatory Learning awards are designed to support the most promising and dynamic projects that enable and enhance innovative participatory learning. These pioneering projects will demonstrate new modes of participatory learning in a variety of environments, by creating new digital tools, modifying existing ones, or using digital media in some other novel way.

Innovation in Participatory Learning Awards

Innovation in Participatory Learning awards are intended to appeal to designers of new learning environments, which might include major adaptations of existing models of gaming, world building, social networking or other virtual environments; or the development of entirely new programs. In all cases, awarded projects must demonstrate a strong commitment to making possible new ways of valuable participatory learning, as opposed to simply creating new content.

Innovation in Participatory Learning awards are for large-scale projects that will typically involve teams of collaborators. These awards, particularly those with the largest budgets, will go primarily to institutional projects rather than to individuals.

Collaboration is strongly encouraged (though not required) in the Innovation in Participatory Learning award category. International collaborations are particularly welcome, provided that the primary applicant meets eligibility requirements.

Innovation in Participatory Learning Details

Awards will range from $30,000 to $250,000. Up to $1.8 million will be awarded in total.

To be eligible, primary applicants must be institutions or organizations registered in Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, Nigeria, The People's Republic of China, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the United States. Since international eligibility is being piloted for this Competition, eligible countries are those with which the HASTAC Competition administrators or MacArthur have familiarity based on their respective experiences. It is anticipated that future Competitions will include broader international eligibility in one or more application categories.

Legal U.S. residents whose principal place of residence is in the U.S. are eligible to apply as individuals.

In all cases, regardless of the award amount, the grant term is one year beginning between June 1, 2009 and September 1, 2009.

Only a small number of the most outstanding projects will be considered for maximum funding levels. Budgets will be scrutinized as part of the selection process. Applicants are advised to submit realistic, moderate budgets.

Budgets may include the costs of project staff, technological consultants, software, hardware, meetings, travel, and up to 15% indirect costs to be calculated on direct costs. Applicants are also required to budget for airfare (or other transportation), transfers, lodging and meals for a two-day “showcase” event in Chicago to be held at the end of the grant term.

All potential applicants should read the complete Guidelines before applying.

MEIFF introduces international competition for advertisements as part of its 2008 line-up

Advertisements have always had the ability to move people to join a specific cause, buy a particular product or simply be amazed at the techniques employed in an average 30-second time slot.

It is for this reason that the Middle East International Film Festival (MEIFF) decided to introduce the International Competition for Advertisements as part of their line-up for the 2008 festival.

Announced by Festival Executive Director Nashwa Al Ruwaini at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, the advertising competition is aimed at rewarding marketing executives for campaigns that have made a strong impact on audiences worldwide.

'Advertising campaigns have captivated audiences worldwide, they define brands, products, social causes, elections and foster emotional connections to cultures. We want to acknowledge the artistic and creative minds behind these advertisements that swamp consumers every day and determine their habits as consumers,'said Nashwa.

The aim of the International Competition for Advertisements is to recognize a very important part of the media that subconsciously influences the minds of audiences every day of their lives much in the same way a film does. As a multicultural city, Abu Dhabi is bustling with people with differing tastes supplying the perfect atmosphere for advertisers to showcase their work.

Prizes for advertising are to be given in the categories of 'Best Essential Objects', 'Best Luxurious Objects' and 'Best Television, Cinema and Digital Techniques' with prizes of $25,000 being awarded in each of the three categories.

Other competition categories in the Black Pearl Awards include feature films and documentaries, short films and student films with total prize money now exceeding $1m in cash. This year's MEIFF will also see several new additions to an already exciting schedule. For the first time, there will be a section of the festival concentrating on Environmental Films as well as a showcase documentaries highlighting the 60 years since the division of Palestine from a non-Arab viewpoint.

MEIFF, to be held in Abu Dhabi from October 10-19, is an annual event and a project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH). The festival is a cultural event dedicated to bringing a diverse slate of international films and programs to the community and introducing filmmakers from around the world to the resources of the region.

The 5th Peugeot Design Competition, launched at the Beijing Motor Show on 20 April 2008, entered its second phase on 20 July 2008, the final date for the submission of projects.

The 5th Peugeot Design Competition, launched at the Beijing Motor Show on 20 April 2008, entered its second phase on 20 July 2008, the final date for the submission of projects.

It’s now time to let amateur designers and motoring enthusiasts have their say as they help to nominate the successor to the Flux project, the last winner of this prestigious contest.

For this competition, Peugeot invited young designers to imagine the Peugeot of the metropolises of tomorrow. This concept car should be designed to be driven in the large urban cities of the future, while exhibiting key values of the 21st century. Projects, while conveying Peugeot’s stylistic qualities, must incorporate four criteria specific to this design competition: environmental friendliness, social harmony, interactive mobility and economic efficiency.

With 2500 projects and a presence that’s as international as ever, with participants from more than 95 different nations, the Peugeot Design Competition, running over a shorter time scale (only 1? months to develop and submit a project), has given designers from all over the world an opportunity to express themselves and propose projects rich in style and innovation.

Indeed, the theme of this 5th edition has inspired all of these creative people to give shape to their vision of the motor car in cities of the future and to envisage a form of urban mobility that’s more versatile, more practical, more economic, but also more fun and more individual.

The 30 projects you are about to discover also reflect the different cultures of our global society. From the simplicity of the Indian “Globe” project to the complexity of the German “Rugir” project, you’ll be able to admire the practicality of the Chinese “Oxo” project.

From 15 August 2008, Internet users will be able to log on to Peugeot’s corporate site, www.peugeot.com to discover all of the 30 projects selected for this 5th edition of the Design Competition.

For one month, they will be able to look at these concept cars and take part in a game to try and find this year’s winner. Each Internet user will be entitled to one vote to become eligible for the prize draw and the chance to win one of the 20 XBOX 360 consoles available as prizes on this occasion. (Rules available from www.peugeot.com, section Design Competition/5th edition).

The next steps:

The ten finalists

The contest is designed to engage students in professional video and audio production.

The theme for the contest is "Community of the Future." We want students to share their vision of how technology will shape their community in the future. For example, what might their community be like in the year 2050? How will people shop, travel, and communicate ? Students are encouraged to interact with their local city council, mayor, city employees, community centers, and other groups to create their film.

Every school that submits a qualifying Call for Entries form will receive film submission guidelines and a Technology in Motion launch kit, which includes :

* Free copy of Sony® Vegas™ Pro 8 Promotional Edition video editing software
* Free copy of Sony® Cinescore™ Promotional Edition soundtrack creation software
* Free Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Cinescore video tutorials
* 1,001 royalty-free, motion picture sound effects
* Assortment of Cinescore themes for royalty-free soundtrack creation
* Free electronic copy of the Vegas Pro Digital Video & Audio Production curriculum guide

Sony Vegas Pro 8 software is a leading professional video and audio production application. Soil Association Organic Food Festival 2008

The Soil Association Organic Food Festival, sponsored by Yeo Valley Organic, is Europe’s largest celebration of all things organic and kicks off this year’s Soil Association Organic Fortnight, a nationwide campaign bringing together individuals, communities, retailers, restaurants, schools and organic farms. The festival will take place in Bristol on September 6 and 7, 2008. Now in its eighth year, the festival will be host to over 300 organic companies showcasing the very best organic food, drink, fashion, skincare and homeware products. Visitors will be spoilt for choice with bustling food markets, a green planet pavilion, a demonstration kitchen, an exciting talks programme, food cruises around the harbour, and an arts and entertainment fringe that includes food demos, children's activities, and music.

New to the festival for 2008 are the Local Market in Anchor Square, the Grow Your Own Organic Garden area, Organic Live! areas including cookery demos and wine tasting and the Food for Life Partnership Cooking Bus in the Kid’s zone. The festival will open with the Matthew sailing towards the Amphitheatre.

This year’s festival is greener than ever with the introduction of sustainably sourced biofuel (from used cooking oil) to power the festival generators, and an emphasis on travelling to the festival by train, bus and ferry. To keep it green and encourage people to come by train, the Soil Association, in partnership with First Travel, are offering a 2 for 1 offer on festival tickets on presentation of proof of using First Travel transport. There will be comprehensive recycling facilities provided by Network Recycling, sponsored by Barts Spices, and the Soil Association is supporting WRAP's 'Love Food Hate Waste' campaign with sessions in the Demo Kitchen and interactive talks - highlighting that the food we throw away is a huge waste of energy, water and packaging.
